Retro Ripper

The Retro Ripper is a versatile, all-around utility shortboard with step-up capabilities, inspired by the high-volume, low-rocker shapes of the 1980s but fine-tuned for today’s more demanding wave conditions. Designed as a dependable daily driver that seamlessly transitions into a semi-step-up for travel or solid surf, it fills the gap for surfers who normally ride wider, thicker boards in small waves—but need something more refined for better days.

Derived from the full-sized Retro Gun, the Retro Ripper brings the volume forward and softens the performance with a winged round pin tail. This tail creates a pivot point that adds looseness and maneuverability in moderate surf while still holding strong when conditions get critical. With its paddle-friendly flat deck, low entry rocker, and double concave vee through the tail, the board offers both speed and control—especially in tricky winds or choppy conditions.

Perfect for surfers tackling East Coast hurricane swells, crowded head-high beach breaks, or long points, the Retro Ripper also thrives in heavy offshore winds or when conditions call for added hold and foam.

Some Design Aspects

Flat deck and low apex rails for paddle power and edge control.
Low entry rocker for fast acceleration, with accelerated tail rocker for tight turns in the pocket.
Rolled vee entry, flat midsection, and deep double concave vee through the tail, offering drive, control, and smooth rail-to-rail transitions.
Winged round pin tail enhances looseness and short-radius turning while maintaining hold in steeper waves.
Retro-inspired aesthetic with vintage ‘80s era logos and Mayhem branding.

Pros:

* Great daily driver that also works as a step-up for travel or bigger days.
* Exceptional paddle power and easy wave entry.
* Handles a wide range of conditions—from head-high beach breaks to punchy points and hurricane swells.
* Winged pin tail adds performance without sacrificing stability.
* Retro style with modern utility.

Cons:

* Higher volume and flatter deck may feel bulky to surfers used to lower-volume shortboards.
* Not as specialized or high-performance as a dedicated shortboard or full step-up in critical surf.
* Retro look may not appeal to minimalist aesthetics.

Summary:

The Retro Ripper is the perfect go-to board for the surfer who thrives on easy paddling and stylish flow, but needs something more trustworthy when the waves pick up. It blends vintage charm with modern functionality, making it a reliable everyday board that doesn’t tap out when the swell jumps. Whether you're chasing hurricane pulses, road-tripping to Mexico, or simply upgrading from a hybrid on bigger days, the Retro Ripper delivers fast, functional fun with old-school flair.
