A modern take on a high-performance quad built for everyday fun.Born from a collaboration between Matt Biolos and former WCT surfer Nate Yeomans, The Mod Quad fuses proven Hawaiian quad design with California-friendly performance. Inspired by the quad boards favored by Shane Beschen and Michael Ho on Oahu, this version has been recalibrated to thrive in everyday, softer conditions found in California, the East Coast, and similar surf zones.
With its low entry rocker and drivey tail rocker, the board paddles easily and generates speed effortlessly. The deep single concave through the center, exaggerated rail line rocker, and vee off the tail create a lively, responsive ride that blends flow and control. The vee functions like a subtle center fin—guiding turns and helping the board release smoothly from rail to rail.
Its fuller nose and set-back wide point allow for lift and paddle power up front, while the hip into a modest swallow tail adds control and quick turning in the pocket. Refined rails and a rolled deck make the board feel more sensitive and nimble than its outline suggests, allowing for 3D rail work and performance-style surfing.
Pros:
*Very fast and drivey in weak to average waves
*Refined rails and concave/vee combo allow sharp, controlled turning
*Great for surfers looking to explore quad setups without sacrificing performance
*Forgiving and user-friendly without feeling sluggish
*Well-balanced between flow and maneuverabilityCons:
*Not ideal in steep, powerful surf where thrusters typically dominate
*Quad-specific feel may take adjustment for die-hard thruster riders
*Not as pivoty off the top as a tight-tail thrusterSummary:
The Mod Quad is a playful yet performance-minded quad that thrives in everyday, average surf. Designed to be surfed shorter and wider than a standard shortboard, it offers speed, forgiveness, and control all in one sleek package. For surfers looking to add something fun and functional to their quiver without going full retro or compromising on performance, the Mod Quad is a versatile daily driver with a modern twist.
