Subscorcher Aipa Sting

REAL WATERSPORT'S REVIEW >

A modern spin on a performance shortboard classic, the Sub Scorcher Sting is a high-volume, easy-riding board designed to bring playfulness and performance together. Originally a breakout hit under the feet of teen phenom Kolohe Andino, the original Sub Scorcher gained traction thanks to its relaxed rocker, wide outline, and forgiving ride. Today, the updated Sting version revives the classic with added versatility and bite.

The Sub Scorcher Sting maintains a mellow entry rocker for effortless paddling and early planing, with a shallow single to double concave that transitions into a spiral vee through the tail. The nose remains pointed for a shortboard feel, while the midsection is widened slightly for added glide and stability. At about 18" up from the tail, the Sting design kicks in—an aggressive reduction in width that introduces a hard angle in the outline, creating a pivot point for quick, radical, controlled turns.

This Sting then flows into a gradual curve and finishes with a 6” wide, shallow swallowtail. The added rail rocker and width through the center allow for faster wave entry and solid drive down the line, while the Sting cut gives the board the ability to jam tight pockets or carve on open faces with ease.

Generously foiled and well-dimensioned, the Sub Scorcher Sting is an approachable yet highly capable board that brings extra flair to average-to-punchy surf.

Pros:

* Easy paddling and early planing from mellow rocker and added center width.
* Sting design allows sharp, controlled turns in tight sections.
* Forgiving and stable, yet retains a high-performance shortboard feel.
* Great balance of speed, flow, and maneuverability.

Cons:

* Not designed for powerful or hollow waves—better in average conditions.
* Extra width may feel sluggish for surfers used to ultra-refined blades.
* Sting tail may take adjustment for those unfamiliar with stepped outlines.

Summary:
The Sub Scorcher Sting is a playful, high-volume shortboard that blends user-friendly design with explosive performance potential. With its mellow rocker, generous outline, and radical Sting tail cut, it’s built for everyday surfers who want to push their turns without sacrificing speed or stability. A creative and capable update to a modern classic.
