Micks Tape

A daring asymmetrical experiment born from constraint and collaboration, designed to push compact performance.

The MicksTape is a radical asymmetrical surfboard, shaped through a collaborative effort between Matt Biolos and Donald Brink for STAB’s 2022 Electric Acid Surfboard Test. Designed specifically for Mick Fanning, the board was restricted to a max length of 5’3, presenting a challenge that forced innovation through both minimalism and engineering precision.

What emerged is a stance-specific performance craft a short, high-volume board that leverages the power and style of a surfer’s frontside and compensates for the heel-side with control-focused asymmetry.

Mick’s own verdict?

He tore through Maldivian reef breaks with style and precision, proving that when executed correctly, a design like this can match the demands of a three-time world champ.

For the everyday surfer, the MicksTape is not a replacement for a staple shortboard—but a quiver enhancer, meant to expand the performance window in small to medium surf. With its compact rail line, added width, and generous volume, it brings speed, responsiveness, and creativity to the forefront, even in less-than-ideal conditions. Riders can size it up for added comfort without losing the performance benefits.

Pros:

*Innovative asymmetry tailored to stance: enhanced turning and balance
*Compact design with surprising volume and speed
*Great complement to a quiver, especially in smaller or playful surf
*Proven performance from Mick Fanning in world-class waves
*Creative blend of performance, theory, and fun

Cons:

*Stance-specific—requires correct matching for regular or goofy stance
*Asymmetry may intimidate traditionalists or those unfamiliar with directional boards
*Not ideal as a primary all-around board; better as a supplemental craft

Summary:
The MicksTape is a bold, inventive surfboard designed under unique constraints—and it thrives within them. While it won’t replace your daily driver, it injects radical creativity and unexpected control into your quiver. Ideal for surfers looking to experiment with asymmetry, without sacrificing performance or wave range. Whether you’re threading pockets or seeking new lines, this "musical medley" of a board may just be the refresh your surfing need
