An easy transition into better waves without abandoning the comfort and familiarity of your daily driver.
The E-Z Up was born from necessity and refined through experience. Originally crafted by Matt Biolos as a personal step-up from small-wave favorites like the LazyBoy and Couch Potato, the E-Z Up was designed to tackle more serious surf while keeping the comfort and wave-catching power of a groveler.
Inspired by a stretched-out LazyBoy, the board features a sleeker, more aggressive rocker profile, a narrower outline, and a re-templated rounded pin tail. With nose-to-tail vee panels and a retro double-ender feel, it blends vintage flow with modern responsiveness. This combination makes the E-Z Up ideal for surfers stepping into winter swells or punchier surf after a season on high-volume boards.
The 2018 refinement (E-Z Up/18) made the board more performance-oriented by reducing overall volume, tightening the rail profile, and straightening the outline for increased drive. Strategic foam placement in the front third maintains paddle power, while the new rails and tail give it bite and hold when needed.
Pros:
* Smooth transition from grovelers to step-up boards
* Rounded pin tail offers control and hold in steeper, faster waves
* Updated rail design adds bite and responsiveness without sacrificing stability
* More drive and speed thanks to straighter center outline
* Refined for better performance without losing user-friendliness
* Still catches waves easily despite reduced volumeCons:
* Less ideal for very soft or gutless surf compared to LazyToy/Couch Potato
* Surfers expecting a full-on step-up for heavy reef waves might want something more specialized
* Not as nimble as a traditional shortboard in tight pocketsSummary:
The E-Z Up is a thoughtful evolution of the high-volume small-wave board, tuned for better days. It provides a seamless progression for surfers looking to step up their game without jumping straight to a narrow, low-volume shortboard. With enough paddle power to get in early and a refined template for performance, it thrives in shoulder-high to overhead waves—without punishing those who aren’t surfing every day.
Perfect for aging rippers, weekend warriors, or anyone needing an “easy up” into better surf.
