The Pyzel Mini Ghost is a compact, high-performance shortboard designed in collaboration with Koa Smith to offer a fun, chunky, and rippable alternative to the classic Ghost—perfectly suited for smaller days and weaker waves. By shrinking Koa’s 5’9” Ghost down to a 5’5” and adding strategic volume, the Mini Ghost balances paddle power and stability with Pyzel’s signature performance feel.
Available in either a round tail or a wider bump squash tail, the Mini Ghost comes with subtle rocker adjustments and a modern “beak” nose shape that maximizes foam under the chest and nose, helping maintain speed and float in soft surf. The deck is flattened slightly, and the rails are thicker and more boxy, creating a forgiving yet responsive ride that suits a broad range of skill levels.
The widened outline and extra volume make this board incredibly stable for its size without sacrificing the ability to perform aggressive turns and quick maneuvers. It’s designed to be ridden 3-4 inches shorter than your regular shortboard but with similar volume, offering a fresh, lively feel that’s perfect for small to medium surf of all types.
Pros:
Compact yet stable: Shorter length combined with added volume delivers easy paddling and balance.
Versatile tail options: Round tail for tighter turns or squash tail for extra lift and looseness in weaker waves.
Modern design elements: Beak nose and flattened deck improve flotation and speed through soft sections.
High-performance fun: Suited for both skilled surfers looking for a playful small-wave board and intermediates needing forgiveness.
Great for weaker surf: Maintains speed and flow in smaller, mushier conditions without losing responsiveness.
Cons:
Not a step-up for big waves: Best performance is found in small to medium surf; may lack drive in overhead or heavier conditions.
Thicker rails may reduce rail-to-rail sharpness: Some surfers accustomed to thinner rails may find the feel less snappy.
Summary:
The Mini Ghost is an ideal small-wave companion that offers the signature speed and flow of the Ghost in a shorter, chunkier, and more paddle-friendly package. Designed with input from Koa Smith, it blends high-performance capability with accessible stability, making it a perfect choice for surfers wanting to stay lively and confident on weaker days without compromising the ability to charge when conditions improve.
