Pyzel & John John Talk The Power Tiger >
The Pyzel Power Tiger was developed at the request of John John Florence to fill the gap between the smaller, weaker-wave-oriented Red Tiger and the more high-performance Ghost. Designed for surf that’s a step up in size and power—especially when waves get hollow and more forceful—the Power Tiger brings a refined, responsive approach for intermediate-to-large conditions without losing the playful edge.
The most noticeable change from the Red Tiger is the outline: both the nose and tail have been pulled in, creating a curvier shape overall. This design tweak improves performance in critical sections by enabling the narrower tail to hold at speed during aggressive turns without sliding out, while the added curve in the tail enhances looseness for tight pocket surfing. The pulled-in nose allows the board to fit into more hollow, cupped waves without catching, giving riders confidence in barreling conditions.
Rails are thinner compared to the Red Tiger, a subtle but impactful adjustment that lets surfers sink their rails cleanly on faster, more powerful waves without excessive pushback. This refinement aids in carving and barrel riding, increasing control and precision. Additionally, a slight increase (⅛ inch) in tail rocker over the last 18 inches of the board loosens up the tail for easier rail engagement and better hold through turns at speed.
The Power Tiger is best ridden when your Red Tiger starts to feel undersized for the conditions—recommended at the same length but with slightly less volume, or an inch longer and a bit narrower. Standard dimensions are about a quarter inch narrower and 1/16 inch thinner than the Red Tiger of comparable length, reflecting its more performance-oriented intent.
Pros:
Designed for bigger, more powerful waves: Pulled-in outline and thinner rails enhance control and hold.
Responsive and loose: Curvier tail and added rocker improve maneuverability in tight pockets and barrels.
Confident in hollow surf: Pulled-in nose fits cupped waves without catching.
Fine-tuned rocker and rails: Enhances rail-to-rail transitions and rail sinking at speed.
Natural progression from Red Tiger: Ideal for surfers moving up in wave size and performance demand.
Cons:
Less forgiving than Red Tiger: Narrower tail and thinner rails require more precise technique and experience.
Not optimized for small or mushy surf: Best suited for more powerful conditions, less versatile in weak waves.
Summary:
The Power Tiger is a finely tuned, high-performance shortboard tailored for surfers stepping up into bigger, more powerful surf while seeking the playful responsiveness of the Red Tiger. With its pulled-in outline, refined rocker, and thinner rails, it offers enhanced control, hold, and looseness in hollow, fast waves—making it a go-to for confident riders looking to push their limits in demanding conditions.
