The Mindcraft, designed by Kelly Slater and Daniel “Tomo” Thomson, is a forward-thinking performance hybrid built around a simple idea: maximum connection between surfer and board through minimal, functional design. Stripping away excess and focusing on clean curves and refined engineering, the Mindcraft represents a more intuitive, “feel-first” evolution of Tomo’s Modern Planing Hull concepts.

The outline is intentionally understated—what Tomo describes as a “seamless blend of straightened elliptical curves.”This creates a highly efficient template that generates speed and drive effortlessly, while maintaining a feeling of precision and control. The board feels locked under your feet, responding instantly and accurately, making it ideal for surfers who want a shape that reacts without hesitation.

Underneath, the Mindcraft features a more subtle and continuous bottom contour than many of Tomo’s earlier designs. A single to double concave runs through the board, offering a balance of lift, flow, and responsiveness without the overly aggressive feel of deeper, more complex contours. Combined with a moderate rocker, the board fits naturally into the curve of smaller waves while still maintaining speed across flatter sections.

Volume is strategically hidden through the center with a rolled deck, keeping the board buoyant and stable while allowing the low-volume, soft rails to engage cleanly for sharp, controlled turns. The torpedo nose reduces swing weight and minimizes the chance of catching during tight maneuvers, while the bump wing round tail adds balance—tightening the turning radius without sacrificing hold or flow.

One of the standout aspects of the Mindcraft is how it keeps the surfer positioned in the “sweet spot”. With foam concentrated between the feet, there’s less need to shuffle forward or back—whether you’re driving through turns or setting a line in the pocket, the board stays responsive and centered.

Built in I-Bolic 2.0 Technology (with smaller sizes in G-Flex), the Mindcraft is lightweight, durable, and lively. It pairs best with Endorfins KSR fins, working equally well as a thruster or quad, giving surfers flexibility depending on conditions and style.

Pros:

  • Extremely responsive with a “connected” feel underfoot
  • Clean, minimal outline delivers speed and precision
  • Subtle concaves provide smooth flow without sacrificing performance
  • Hidden volume and low rails balance stability with control
  • Versatile fin setups (Thruster or Quad) expand performance range
  • Performs well in both punchy and flatter small-wave conditions

Cons:

  • Less forgiving than fuller, more traditional grovelers
  • Minimalist design may feel different for surfers used to more pronounced contours
  • Best performance comes from active, engaged surfing

Summary:
The Mindcraft is a refined, modern performance shape that prioritizes feel, precision, and flow over complexity. By simplifying the outline and softening the bottom contours, Kelly Slater and Tomo have created a board that feels intuitive and fast, yet controlled and responsive. Ideal for 2’ to overhead surf, it excels in everyday conditions while still offering enough performance to push hard in better waves. For surfers looking for a clean, connected ride that reacts instantly and stays under their feet, the Mindcraft lives up to its name—a true meeting point between design and intuition.
