The FRK Swallow is the latest evolution in the FRK series, designed by Dan Mann with input from Kelly Slater to bring a more versatile and playful feel to the performance shortboard category—specifically in waves 5' and under. Where the original FRK thrives in punchy, critical surf, the FRK Swallow is tuned for speed, flow, and responsiveness in less-than-ideal conditions, without sacrificing the core performance DNA of the line.

The most noticeable change is the swallow tail, which enhances release and control, especially during tight carves and fin-blow maneuvers. Dan Mann also focused on redistributing the volume under the surfer’s stance for added stability and drive, and redesigned the rocker curves through both the center and the rails to maximize speed generation in flatter sections.

The board shines in everyday surf where flow and versatility matter. According to team feedback, it outperforms other Slater Designs models during downcarves and fin release turns, offering a mix of control and looseness that feels energetic and intuitive. It’s designed to be surfed 2" shorter than the original FRK and 1" shorter than the FRK+, making it more compact and reactive underfoot.

Pros:

  • Swallow tail adds release and agility in turns

  • Refined rocker and rail curves generate speed in flatter sections

  • Volume under the stance boosts stability and drive

  • Excels in downcarves and release-based maneuvers

  • Tuned for better performance in everyday, sub-epic waves

Cons:

  • Not designed for waves above head-high or steep barrels

  • More performance-minded than forgiving—still rewards a skilled rider

  • Shorter length and tail shape may require adjustment from traditional shortboard feel

Summary:
The FRK Swallow is a high-performance shortboard that fills the gap between elite-level step-ups and grovelers. It's quick, responsive, and particularly well suited for surfers looking to keep their rail game sharp in weaker or average surf. With refined curves, clever volume placement, and a tail that enhances control and playfulness, it’s the most versatile FRK yet—perfect for 2–5' surf and everyday sessions that still demand progression.
