The Cymatic is a radical fusion of two of Daniel ‘Tomo’ Thomson’s most influential designs—the Sci-Fi and the Omni—resulting in an ultra high-performance hybrid that pushes the boundaries of modern shortboard surfing. Blending the lift, speed, and futuristic contouring of the Sci-Fi with the compact, reduced-nose template of the Omni, the Cymatic delivers a ride that feels fast, precise, and explosively responsive.
At the heart of this shape is Tomo’s signature Double Bat Tail paired with his Quad Inside Single Concave. The double bat tail adds grip and bite on the wave face, while the deep concaves generate extreme lift and speed. Together, they create a controlled chaos: rapid acceleration with enough traction to stay on track in critical sections. The increased rocker(compared to the original Sci-Fi) adds an extra degree of maneuverability and forgiveness in tighter pockets and on steeper faces.
The reduced swing weight and compact outline make this board extremely agile, particularly in the 1–5' range, but it holds its line in bigger surf thanks to the grip and drive generated by the tail and bottom contours. The Cymatic shines when the waves have shape, allowing surfers to engage in tight wraps, fast rail transitions, and even draw out bigger lines with surprising control.
Pros:
Hybrid design offers the speed of the Sci-Fi with the maneuverability of the Omni
Double bat tail provides added control and hold in critical sections
Quad Inside Single Concave delivers incredible lift and acceleration
Handles a wide range of conditions, from waist high to solid overhead
Compact outline with reduced swing weight for fast, responsive surfing
Cons:
Highly engineered feel may not suit traditionalists or beginners
Extreme lift and speed can feel “on the edge” in bigger waves
Less forgiving in mushy or extremely weak surf compared to a true groveler
Summary:
The Cymatic is a high-performance hybrid built for surfers who want to blend speed, control, and futuristic design in one compact package. With features drawn from both the Sci-Fi and Omni, it’s fast and grippy yet playful—ideal for surfers who like a board that feels alive underfoot. Best in 1–5’ surf with some shape, it’s a dynamic shape that rewards confident, progressive surfing and stands out as a key piece in Tomo’s planing hull evolution.
