The Astro Pop XL builds on the trusted retro fish design of the original Astro but adds extra volume and paddle power for weaker, slower waves—while maintaining a lively, performance-driven feel that’s just as fun in better surf.

Featuring a more pulled-in nose and tail, the Astro Pop XL also incorporates a subtle wing at the tail’s end, which enhances the outline’s curve. This added curve improves maneuverability without compromising the board’s natural speed and flow.

The bottom contour boasts a deep double concave running through to a vee off the tail, allowing the board to plane effortlessly over slow sections and still release smoothly onto the rail at speed. The mild beak nose maintains thickness forward for added paddle power but avoids unnecessary bulk, aided by a flatter entry rocker that makes catching waves easier.

The board is recommended as a quad for maximum speed and drive but comes stock with a versatile 5-fin setup to accommodate different surfing styles and conditions. Riders are encouraged to size down as much as they like and go approximately ¾ to 1 inch wider than their usual shortboard, with slightly more thickness to add volume.

Pros:

  • Extra paddle power: Increased volume makes it ideal for weaker, slower surf.

  • Enhanced maneuverability: Pulled-in nose and tail with a wing create a lively, responsive feel.

  • Efficient bottom design: Deep double concave and vee tail improve speed and rail control.

  • Versatile fin options: Stock 5-fin setup with recommendation to ride as a quad for speed.

  • Performance edge: Retains fun, snappy handling in better wave conditions.

Cons:

  • Not optimized for heavy surf: Retro fish shape and flatter rocker may limit performance in steep, powerful waves.

  • May feel bulky to surfers accustomed to modern narrow shortboards.

Summary:

The Astro Pop XL is a volume-enhanced evolution of the classic retro fish, designed to excel in slower, weaker waves while keeping a playful, performance-oriented edge. It offers excellent paddle power, smooth rail-to-rail transitions, and plenty of speed, making it a versatile choice for surfers who want a fun, easy-to-ride board across a wide range of conditions. Whether you’re looking to boost your small-wave sessions or maintain lively performance on better days, the Astro Pop XL delivers with style and confidence.
