The Pyzel Ghost stands out as a groundbreaking high-performance shortboard that remarkably caters to a wide range of skill levels, making it a serious contender for a true one-board quiver. Initially designed for hollow and powerful waves, it has since proven its versatility across a wide spectrum of surf conditions—reef breaks, punchy beach breaks, and long point waves included.

A favorite of John John Florence, the Ghost has demonstrated world-class performance in waves like Margaret River, J-Bay, and even head-high Trestles. The design is a refined evolution of the Short Cut, with a slightly forward wide point, a more tapered nose and tail, and foiled rails that create a perfect balance between paddle power and control in the pocket.

The medium-to-low entry rocker helps the board catch waves early and build speed quickly, while the more aggressive tail rocker allows for tight, responsive turns. The single-to-double concave bottom adds lift and maneuverability, helping the board transition smoothly rail to rail, even over flat spots.

Pros:

  • Versatile performance: Excels in a wide range of wave types, from reef breaks to beachies and points.

  • User-friendly for all levels: Surprisingly approachable for intermediate surfers while still satisfying pros.

  • Great paddle power: Forward volume distribution aids in wave-catching.

  • Responsive handling: Tail rocker and rail foil deliver snappy turns and strong hold in barrels.

  • Proven pedigree: Endorsed and ridden in a wide range of waves by elite surfers like JJF.

Cons:

  • Not ideal for very small or mushy waves: The Ghost shines in decent to good surf; grovelers still have their place.

  • Requires correct sizing: Dialing in the right volume and dimensions (typically a bit bigger than your standard shortboard) is key to unlocking its potential.

Summary:

The Pyzel Ghost is a refined, performance-oriented surfboard that offers an impressive mix of speed, control, and versatility. Its ability to work across a wide range of conditions and its accessibility to surfers beyond the elite ranks make it a rare gem in the high-performance category. For any surf trip with quality waves, the Ghost could easily be the only board you need.
