WATCH RUSTY'S REVIEW >

Originally born from a modified version of the Yes Thanks model for the 2016 "Stab in the Dark" project, the Rusty SD (Stab in the Dark) has evolved into a refined, versatile shortboard that blends modern performance with rider-friendly tweaks. Rusty subtly puffed up the outline, nudged the center point forward, and shaped in a deep single concave that runs from nose to tail—zeroing out beneath the rear fin and finishing with a touch of vee off the tail for smoother transitions and rail-to-rail flow.

The SD’s outline and rocker have been slightly tuned post-SITD, adding a touch more curve, especially in the entry, which helps it engage quickly and navigate steeper, more critical sections with ease. The continuous, accelerating curve towards the tail gives it extra responsiveness and control at higher speeds.

This board has a high-performance feel but with a touch more accessibility built in, making it an excellent choice for intermediate-to-advanced surfers looking for a board that works well in everyday good-to-epic conditions. Clint Rusty, Rusty's son, officially named the board “SD” and gave it a slight rocker tweak that added extra spark without sacrificing drive or flow.

Pros:

  • Deep single concave and subtle vee allow for speed, drive, and smooth transitions.

  • Forward center point and added volume make it more forgiving than a typical high-performance shortboard.

  • Tweaked rocker adds maneuverability without compromising flow or speed.

  • Versatile design handles a wide range of conditions, from shoulder-high to solid overhead.

Cons:

  • Might feel too full or "puffed up" for surfers who prefer ultra-refined, narrow performance boards.

  • Best suited for clean, punchier waves—can feel stiff or overbuilt in weak, mushy surf.

Summary:
The Rusty SD is a polished evolution of a pro-level board made more accessible. Originally designed for elite performance in "Stab in the Dark," it now offers a forgiving, responsive ride with high-end capability. With its deep concave, tweaked rocker, and subtle design modifications, the SD delivers a smooth blend of drive, control, and speed—ideal for intermediate-to-advanced surfers chasing performance in quality surf.
