WATCH SURF STATION'S REVIEW >

The Four is a California-bred performance utility board built with versatility and creativity in mind, straight from the mind of Dane Reynolds. Originally the fourth concept in a numbered series developed just before the 2012 US Open, this design has evolved into a dual-personality workhorse: a compact groveler for small waves and a refined utility bladefor everyday conditions with punch.

Featuring a blend of single to double concave with vee out the tail, the Four is engineered for responsiveness and speed in a wide range of surf. The 13”+ nose and 15”+ tail with a double bump provide lift, early wave entry, and the ability to pivot quickly, while still maintaining a short rail line that makes it lively and nimble.

Dane Reynolds helped fine-tune the design by riding it in two different dimensions—one for small, weak surf and one for more well-rounded, punchy waves:

  • As a groveler, go about 4" shorter than your height.

  • For utility use, ride it 2" shorter than your height.

This makes the Four a quiver consolidator for surfers who want a playful yet performance-forward board without switching shapes entirely between sessions.

Pros:

  • Dual Configurations: Groveler and utility versions allow custom tuning for your local conditions.

  • Fast and Responsive: Concave to vee bottom offers quick transitions and control.

  • Great Shortboard Alternative: Compact size with full nose and tail give it paddle power without sacrificing agility.

  • Built With Dane’s Input: Proven design pedigree refined by one of the most innovative surfers in the world.

Cons:

  • Less Vertical Than a Full HPSB: Tailored for performance, but not the steepest or most critical waves.

  • Takes Dialing In: Two setups may require experimentation with sizing and conditions to get the most out of it.

Final Verdict:
The Four is a creative and performance-minded utility board that serves up the best of both worlds—groveling ease and all-around sharpness. It’s a smart pick for surfers who want one board that can stretch across conditions, or those who want a small-wave board that still allows for dynamic, expressive surfing. Whether you’re threading Huntington mush or packing in solid California beach breaks, the Four adapts without compromise.
